  1. He is definitely one of the best and has been surrounded by excellent musicians his entire life. Think about that for a second, being able to sit in a sessions with the alman brothers band at a young young age. Not such a bad thing having Warren Haynes around to play with.

  2. Actually, Steve Vai DID play in the first Crossroads festival. And, nice job "interpreting" what Derek was talking about to make it conform with your prejudices…

  3. Why the hell are you people talking about Vai in a Derek truck’s video? I am pretty sure Clapton is never going to ask Steve Vai to play at the crossroads tour. Well actually maybe if they want to reproduce the battle in crossroads? But Vai is exactly the type of player he was talking about when he made the comment that, he didn’t care how good a player someone is, if there isn’t some greater purpose of theme or emotion being delivered on stage, he wasn’t going to see an artist like that live.

  4. That would be the Indian mandolin player Uppalapu Shrinivas (or Srinivas).

  5. I think the style chooses you, you don’t choose the style rather.

  6. "over the yayers?" he must be from savannah georgia or someplace huh?

  9. When I first saw this guy in my life, I was a kid, and I sweared I would be like him when I was grown up.

Than I realized that he is 3 years younger than me.

He is, for sure, a legend since he was born!

  10. I agree with you for the most part, except I would have to disagree that Vai can do what Trucks does, nor do I think he would want to, because it’s not his style. By the same token, I don’t think Trucks could do what Vai does, and again, nor would he want to. They chose these styles for a particular reason. Like you said, different people, different train.

  11. Couldn’t agree more with your statement. Its unfair to compare the two, but for the people who enjoy deep emotional blues that really reaches out and touches you, Derek is the one to turn to. But Steve Vai has his place and time as well

  12. js.have you watched the movie crossroads from like 1985.Vai is in it.and he shows a different side of his talent.Vai doesnt do it but he can do it.Vai came up through the Zappa band

  13. Saw him years ago – he was a kid – playing around with some guitars at the old Thoroughbred Music in Tampa. I think he was about 12 or 13 and I’m watching this kid mess around thinking, I either gotta practice A LOT more, or just pack it in and buy a wood block. Unbelievable talent.

  14. Please people stop fighting over who’s a better guitarist. It’s music, it doesn’t have to be a certain type. Derek plays with emotion, Vai plays with emotion, Yngwie plays with emotion, just leave them alone and listen to the music. They don’t argue over who’s a better guitarist, so why should we? Just grab your guitar and jam. God Bless!!

  15. i saw the Allman Brothers last year and OMG, Derek is one of the best I’ve ever seen along with Haynes. Great show!!
