My lesson on Baby Boy Warren led me to see just how exciting and cool Calvin Frazier was. Rock House is a tour-de-force of a rockin’ juke joint recorded live from The Palmer Hotel in Detroit and issued by J-V-B, a black-owned blues label on Hastings Street. A master of the open strings in the manner of Scrapper Blackwell or Left Hand Frank– his tone just clangs and rings! Then he lets it rip ala Ike Turner on one of those new-fangled Stratocasters. It makes me want to spend all my $ on a tiny 50s amp, dang it! And the fantabulous Washboard Willie has a way of ALWAYS putting more gas on the fire! Yes, yes, yes– “suds of rhythm indeed”! Check out his decked out bass drum to see what I mean (and check out his great record Whippin’ That Board with Frazier on guitar).
Lilly Mae is more modern– an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink guitar attack. Time didn’t allow a complete note-for-note solo on this one but I picked out some of his cool “Frazier’isms”. He really shows an original take on the urban blues styles of the day on this one. The intro is devastating!
