Folsom Prison Blues Guitar Lesson (Solo Note-For-Note)

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a PRO guitarist?

Someone who makes a full-time living playing guitar…

Well, let me tell you a story about what it’s like…

One late fall afternoon about 12 years ago my phone rang…

It was the leader of a Johnny Cash tribute band…

One of my good buddies at the time (let’s just call him Steve) was the guitarist for this band.

It turns out Steve had just gotten a call to go on tour with another artist he’d been really wanting to work with.

So naturally, Steve took the gig.

But this left the band he played with in town WITHOUT a guitarist.

So I got the call to fill in…

The band leader said, “We have a gig in 2 days can you make it?”

I could and so I said, “Sure”…

The band leader then said ok, “Here’s where the gig is…

….you’ve gotta wear a black suit…

…and we’ve got a set list of 44 songs, so here’s the setlist…

Got it? Ok, cool we’ll see you Friday at the gig.”

And that was it!

I spent the next 2 days learning 44 Johnny Cash songs.

And then did the gig with no rehearsal.

But it gets even crazier…

At the gig, and not related to me…

A fight broke out that night.

(This has only ever happened once in my career.)

Someone in the audience got too drunk and even tried to get onstage and use the mic.

…It was WILD!

That’s what just one week of being a working musician could be like…

So today I have a lesson for you on how to play (note-for-note) one of the blues solos I jammed that night.
