The first time I heard this tune was the Jerry Garcia & David Grisman version from the Pizza Tapes album. That whole album blew my mind, and this song was so haunting and beautiful. Later I heard the Johnny Cash version and fell in love with it all over again. I love how, even with a simple melody, this song feels different with every performer, based on the feel, inflections, emotional undercurrents, & melodic changes that each musician imparts.
