This easy guitar lesson on the 12 bar blues will show you how to play this common technique using 3 variations.

The 12 bar blues can be thought of as 3 groups of 4 bars. That is, the first 4 bars, plus the second 4 bars, followed by the third 4 bars, all totally 12 bars. For the first variation, you’ll play the 1 chord all the way through, in the first group of 4 bars. For this lesson, Gary is using the key of A, and the 1 chord in the key of A is the A chord.

The second group of 4 bars will be split between the 1 chord and the 4 chord, which is a D. So that’s 2 bars of D, and 2 bars of A.

In the third group of bars, you’ll use the V chord for two bars, which is an E, and then the remaining 2 bars will be A again.

There are more variations that Gary will show you in this video, so check out the video for yourself. You’re going to have a ton of fun!
