Today I’m sharing my take on free-form acoustic blues, drawing inspiration from African music rather than traditional Delta or American blues styles. I’ll show you how to capture that bouncy, free-flowing rhythm that you hear in music from the Sahara and West Africa – where the blues truly originated.

I’ll demonstrate some simple but effective techniques, including how to use drone notes and work with the third and fifth frets to create a modal sound that’s neither strictly major nor minor. We’ll explore a thumb-and-finger playing style that creates a unique rhythmic feel, and I’ll show you some key licks that capture this primal, playful sound.

If you’re interested in exploring the roots of blues before it crossed the Atlantic, this lesson is for you. And for inspiration, check out Fatoumata Diawara’s music – she’s an amazing example of this style.
