In this video, I explore open G tuning for acoustic blues guitar from my garden in Maui. I discuss how open tunings can add a special sound to your playing, mentioning artists like Keb MO and Taj Mahal who have inspired me and with whom I’ve had the pleasure of performing.

I explain that open G tuning (DGDGBD) is forgiving but requires a guitar that can handle the slack, possibly with heavier strings. I demonstrate some basic techniques, including a simple shuffle pattern and chord progressions, showing how to move between the I, IV, and V chords in this tuning.

I also touch on some more advanced techniques, like using the low D string for a fat sound on the V chord and incorporating sus4 voicings for a Keith Richards-style sound. Throughout the video, I emphasize the versatility of open G tuning for acoustic blues, demonstrating various fingerstyle patterns and chord voicings.
