Hey, Blues enthusiasts! Today, we’re diving deeper into acoustic blues in the key of E, focusing on adding harmony to your shuffle.
We’ll start with a classic Jimmy Reed-style shuffle, moving from the 2nd to the 4th fret on the A string while hammering that low E. This basic shuffle also works great in A by repeating the pattern on the D string. It’s perfect for a JJ Cale vibe or a gutbucket blues feel.
Next, we’ll elevate your blues playing by adding some harmonic sophistication. Instead of just playing the basic shuffle, we’ll introduce a new voicing:
Place your second finger on the 2nd fret of the A string.
Pick up the 1st fret of the G string with your first finger.
Pinch the A and D strings for a richer sound.
We’ll also explore a more ambitious move by incorporating the high E string and emphasizing timing to maintain the groove. As Victor Wooten says, “Never sacrifice the groove in pursuit of a note.”
We’ll apply these techniques to the four and five chords in E blues, adding harmony notes and changing finger placements to create new textures. This lesson is all about expanding your blues vocabulary with subtle yet impactful changes.
