Today I’m excited to share a special lesson focusing on electric slide guitar in open G tuning, featuring my cherished James Trussart Silver Magnolia guitar – a beautiful instrument with quite a history, previously played by the legendary Sonny Landreth. I’m playing through my Sommatone overdrive 35 amp from Jimmy in Austin, Texas, which gives us that perfect edge of dirt for slide work.
In this lesson, I’ll break down a swampy, blues-influenced groove that’s reminiscent of the modern Clapton band’s take on “Crossroads.” We’ll explore the basics of slide technique in open G tuning (D-G-D-G-B-D), focusing on tone, touch, and timing. I’ll show you how to work with the four and five chords, demonstrate some essential turnarounds, and share tips on getting that perfect mix of clean and dirty tones that’s so crucial for slide playing.
I’ll walk you through everything slowly, then demonstrate it up to speed so you can see how it all comes together. We’ll talk about the importance of what I call the four T’s – Touch, Tone, Time, and Taste – and how they contribute to becoming a fully integrated guitarist.
I’ll even share a few stories from my experiences playing with artists like Carlos Santana.
