The understated but clever and very memorable guitar solo in Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison Blues was played by Luther Perkins. Here I’ve analysed and tabbed out precisely the way he played it, way back in ol’ 1955.
Luther Perkins tuned his guitar to F instead of E (so up a half step from standard tuning) and played the song in the key of F, but used simple open chord shapes (E, A, B7).
But you can achieve the same thing by using a capo on fret 1 in standard tuning. The tab in this chart is written with this in mind.
