This song is about my grandfather who spent most of his life out in the woods as a woodcutter.
I recorded it live in the attic of our old farmhouse. In the back you can see piles of those old tools they would have used back then, when everything was made by hand. The guitar is a wooden National Triolian from 1929.

LYRICS

Bowed down by age
He walks along the snowy way
One can hardly see the tracks
Army jacket, alpine boots
Sound of snow crunching underfoot
He slowly turns and looks back

There goes a relic of the past
You might wonder how long he’ll last
There goes a witness of the time
When everything was made by hand

So many miles, day by day
Hauling logs on a wooden sleigh
He never backed down
The axe is always sharp and clean
The farthest place he’s ever been
Was the nearby town

Drudgery has left its scars
Hands tough like boxing gloves
But eyes still bright and clear
I can hear the old folks say:
“Work like a horse and plough ahead!”
He walks away and slowly disappears
