I love how people who only play rock only think in terms of pentatonic scales. Also, I believe Trucks learned slide because he basically grew up an Allman.

Derek plays everything in open-E. I met him after a concert once and asked him about it. He did indeed learn all of the scales in alternate tuning. He began playing slide because he was so small when he started playing that his hands weren’t big enough to play normally. Eventually it just stuck. Watch videos of him soloing; it even looks like he’s playing in alternate tuning. Also, he switches back and forth between slide and fingers a lot mid-playing. Hope that helps!

so when someone says that derek trucs plays in open E for slide what about when he is soloing without the slide? has he relearned all the major/minor penatonics scales to accommodate the open tuning, cause it really seems like the guitar is standard tuned or maybe he has dropped the low E to D?? I ask in earnest not being sarcastic.

Sorry bad way to put it. What I mean is the nut has a radius and some slide players follow the radius with the strings at the bridge and some like to set up the strings flat at the bridge. I was wondering how you set yours up?

I’ve never done this. Not really sure what that means.

Do you set up radius from nut to flat at the bridge?

How is your action set up? I didn’t see you muting behind the slide and my slide always sounds tinty compared to yours. Amp settings? Great stuff, thanks!

GREAT STUFF, JOHN…well done! Do you think the open tunings are any easier than the standard tuning slide? Pro/Cons?
