In this video, Iโm showing you some really basic slide guitar techniques using my trusty National Stacy in open G tuning. Iโll walk you through the tuning process: lowering your low E to D, dropping the A string to G, leaving D and G strings as they are, keeping the B string the same, and tuning the high E down to D.
I demonstrate how to play in open G, which is also known as Sebastable tuning or slack key tuning in Hawaii. Iโm playing with a plexiglass slide on my pinky, but you can use metal or other materials too.
We explore moving between the I chord (open G), the IV chord (C at the 5th fret), and the V chord (D at the 7th fret). I emphasize that with slide guitar, you need to position directly over the fret rather than between frets like in standard guitar playing.
I share some tips on technique, including the importance of touch and proper muting. I show how to use the open D string as a drone when playing the V chord, and demonstrate finger-picking patterns that work well for country blues in the style of Mississippi John Hurt.
Near the end, I give you a peek at Wahini tuning, where you tune the low D down another whole step to C, creating some beautiful open chord voicings.
