nice, I followed along in standard tuning but I’ll get the tele down later (it’s tuned in open G, always). I think it sounds ok with out the standard Keith hammer on (like in Brown Sugar), if you just hammer on the B string, one fret up from the barre and three frets up. Like you commented, to each his own personal taste. I bet Keith almost never plays it the same way twice

Nice job. Sounds good in open G tuning too.

I am not going to tell you, or anyone else for that matter, how to play the song, or what tuning to play it in. It’s of course your preference. Rock On! I enjoy your lessons.

Ok, so I tried tuning to open-E, and I even found a tab for "shelter" somewhere in that tuning. It just doesn’t sound right to me. You can play the same notes in that tuning, but it sounds crowded and playing all 6 strings just doesn’t sound like the recording to me. I could be wrong, of course. It really comes down to personal preference, I think. Historians who want to play it JUST LIKE KEITH, have at it. But I’ll play it in open-G.

Yes, I’d heard that some of the 1968-1970 songs could be either open-E or open-G… I know that’s the case with "Jumpin’ Jack Flash." And the tabs found online for "Shelter" are spotty at best. I can totally hear where it wasn’t "quite right." I haven’t experimented much in open-E (much less to find tabs for ANYTHING in it), but I will have to try it and see what happens. Thanks for the tip!

I believe that "Gimme Shelter" is played in Open "E" rather than Open "G". I am fortunate to own several guitars, and I keep one guitar tuned to Open E just to play Gimme Shelter. I love your lessons in Open G. I enjoy playing in Open G much better than in concert tuning. Keep up the good work, but you may want to check the tuning for Gimme Shelter. You can really hear the difference when you play along with the recording.
