  1. Numbers are just a way to refer to the notes. It really does not matter what you call them, as long as you know how to USE them. Play it by heart, that’s what it’s all about.

  3. What I mean is, I see how you slow down when you start playing the numbers game, but you’re fast as lightning when you’re just playing with your heart instead of your cerebral cortex. You get gummy and clumsy trying to translate into numbers. Play it, not say it.

  5. You such a good player, Rot, but when I hear all these numbers mine eyes glaze over. Been playing for 50 years but every time I start hearing all these numbers I cringe away. Do you think Jimi and Stevie and the rest are up on Cloud Nine talking about thirds and flat fifths and thirteens and blah blah? Or are they just jammin out? I’m not knocking, mind you, just sayin’. Numbers are a seductive trap, I think. Seen too many musicians gummed up by them.
