Specifics: Clean guitar chords for comparing speakers side-by-side. Each speaker segment starts with Single-Coil tapped at Neck, then switches to Bridge Humbuckers (DiMarzio). +-40W PP home-brew amp Tung-Sol KT66 (meh), RCA Vintage 12AX7 and 12AU7 with Edcor power and output transformers Parker Fly Deluxe I didnt remove the Private Jack from the combo amp because Im lazy. So the Red White & Blues, Wizard, Cannabis Rex were interchanged in the same birch ply cabinet (on the left). Private Jack was in the larger combo cab (middle). The generic Crate Eminence replacement speaker is loaded 1 speaker in a 2×12 cab: detuned. I tried very carefully to get mic placement the same for each speaker; about half-way between the dustcap and the surround, 5" from the cone. I did not equalize the volume of each speaker in order to give you an idea how efficient each is (The Wizard is much louder than the others). I also noticed the recorded wave of The Wizard is very compressed when switched to humbuckers. This speaker breaks up earlier than the others, but sounds thin until it does break up.

  1. I watch craigslist and try to pick up a speaker for $25 to $50 whenever I can. So far I can only afford Eminence 😉 But they sound nice!

  2. Thanks for this, I ordered RWB’s on the word of a friend, it’s nice to know what they will sound like. Can’t wait now…lol

  3. No problem. It was nice to have free time again. I’ve been helped often by youtube demos, and speakers are really tough to compare since no one has 50 speakers loaded up in the showroom for us to hear.

  4. thx for time Mr Mustard, greatly appreciated 😉 I’ll probably go for the private jack since I’m looking for a greenback type o sound.
