Hey, who is John Martin? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of him… Dave says he listened to him when he was young? Anyone have any insight?

This post is OUTSTANDING. It is sad to say that throughout all of these years (for me since the 80’s) very few knew the genius and talent that Mr. Wakeling has.
I wish all of us who grew up with EB could see this interview. We dont see enough of Dave Wakeling or the others that brought the 80’s alive.

I just noticed the upside down thing!!! I’ve only been a musician for 42 years and have always loved the English Beat but never noticed Dave played upside down. At least I knew he was a lefty!! Ha ha!!

Another thing that is cool about this tuning is that if you want to strum out a melody, you can do so with the two A strings. Makes for some ethereal sounding melodies. A slide works wonderful in this tuning as well. With a bit of knowledge in diatonic harmony and modes this tuning can compliment Celtic and blues styles nicely.

DADAAD is a wild tuning that I have been doing for about a year and a half. I used to always tune to DADGAD and to play the nice D chord I always had one finger on the G string 2nd fret. I thought what if I tuned the guitar so that I didn’t have to put my finger on the 2nd fret and thus DADAAD was born for me. The awesome thing is that it is a huge 5th chord so you can play the open strings as either a major or a minor as well as any fret thereafter.

whoa, he strings it upside down too e.g. low string on the bottom, high on the top

Rush Hope is in DADAAD as well. If you don’t want your G string to break, get heavy gauge strings. Or, tune to DbAbDbAbAbDb instead (C#G#C#G#G#C#)

Very Cool. Stumping both Townsend & Gilmour. Well done, Dave!
