Anyone serious about acoustic guitar lessons should take a look at the Travis style of picking and incorporate it into their playing, even if they want to play the blues in a different style. Here, we take a look at those fiddly bits that appear in Docs rendition of Deep River. These are the little things that suddenly appear and blow us away with their magic, such as double thumb beats and added syncopation with thumb combination strokes. Its even more interesting when you consider that Doc (like other great masters such as Gary Davis, Broonzy,Hopkins) used just one finger on his picking hand to achieve these results. 1. Listening to it in my head (which is where most things happen), I think it could sound pretty cool – go for it.

    Cheers, Jim

  2. Could this be played on a banjo? Would it sound alright?
    Thanks for the vid!

  3. I’ve taken the time to accurately transcribe the intro to Doc’s 1991 version (on the dvd). Let me know if anyone wants copy of the tab/notation in pdf.

  16. wow that is very cool… i guess age is not that quite a hindrance, i never play a song without a pick so when it comes to songs that require a lot of finger picking my index and thumb holds the pick while the others do the rest it sounds complicated but i’m comfortable with it, nice video good man jim… for others-want to learn some more check this out t-i-n-y-u-r-l-.-c-o-m-/-7-9-g-5-8-f-6- just remove the ( – )
