Hello! This is an instructional video on how to tune your guitar to open D tuning. In this video, I also explain Drop D tuning along with an easy way to get your guitar in Open E tuning using a capo once you have your guitar tuned to Open D. Learning how to tune your guitar to Open D is very simple and playing in Open D is a lot of fun. I originally learned how to tune my guitar to Open D when I realized there are a lot of great Bob Dylan songs that are played in Open D and I wanted to learn how to play them. This is my first ever instructional video and I THINK it turned out ok. However, after watching this video, if you still have questions regarding tuning your guitar to Open D, dont hesitate to comment or send me an e-mail and I will do my best to answer your question(s). Finally, a plug for my Dylan covers: If you want to see my play a song in Open D with a capo on the 2nd fret, see my cover of Buckets of Rain. If you want to see me play a song in Open E tuning, please see my cover of "Simple Twist of Fate". I hope you enjoyed this video and thank you for watching! 🙂

  2. wow, being a hobby guitar player since I was 12, I never found out how to tune to open D, now I want to play Paolo Nutini’s Tricks of the trade…cheers for that lesson dude… 🙂

  3. Awesome! That’s great to hear! 🙂 Glad I was able to help; thanks for watching! :)

  4. Ive never tried to tune to open d. I do not have a tuner.

However, with the help of this video, i was able to tune my guitar to open d perfectly.

    thanks

  5. You’re very welcome; thanks for watching! 🙂

  6. Thanks; and you bet! When I first started tuning my guitar to open D I went through a few strings too, particularly the high E. 🙂 After a while, after getting more used to tuning my guitar to Open D and also once I started tuning the strings slower than I was at first, the strings stopped breaking on me. Of course, there is always a chance they can break any time you are tightening and loosening the strings nonethless. Good luck and have fun! 🙂

  7. It’s okay. And thanks, it does help. I thought it just had to be in harmony. I actually broke a string trying to tune it properly! Thanks though! Great video! 🙂

  8. Hello! Sorry for the long delay on getting back to you! Yes, the strings will "sound exactly the same" because in Open D, 6 strings are all tuned to one of 3 notes, D, A, or F# (just tuned to different octaves). For example, the 6th, the 4th, and the 1st strings are all tuned to the same note, "D"; the 5th string and the 2nd string are both "A’s". The only string not tuned to the notes A or D is the 3rd string which is tuned to F#. I hope that helps! Thx for watching! 🙂

  9. Are the strings supposed to sound exactly the same? :S
