In my last video (Old Ground Hog – tenor guitar thumb picking) I mentioned that my guitar was tuned in open F (CFAC). What I didnt mention is that I use the ADGB nylon strings for classical guitar. That is to say the 4 middle strings dropping the low E and the high E. So I have brought the A string up to C, the D string up to F, the G string up to A and the B string up to C. This gives my old Gibson tenor guitar a nice mellow sound. Also, because the guitar is tuned to open FI can strum and sing while using bar chords. Open is F, bar at the 5th fret is Bb and bar at the 7th fret is C. This method of playing came in handy a few years back when just before a gig with my skiffle group I cut one of my fingers on my left hand with a kitchen knife. Unable to make any chords I almost cancelled the gig until I realized that I could "fake it" if I used open tuning and played bar chords. To see this go to Digging My Potatoes at Zekes Gallery youtu.be In this video I use this method while singing but use my thumb picking style for the instrumentals.
