Anyone watching this probably knows about Robert Johnson being one of the most important and influential blues figures in history. If not, check him out on Wikipedia and elsewhere. This song was recorded by Johnson on 19 June 1937 and has been covered by several artists, including Eric Clapton. However, there is something special about the primitive original, with just vocal and guitar. I have put together a Ken Burns style slideshow video. Comments are invited.

  1. There are only about 3 photos of him. I used high res versions and cropped and manipulated them to seem like a lot more. However I did use others which looked like him to make the video stretch out, and hopefully make it interesting, not just the usual static photo of him.

  2. The only pictures in this video that I have seen before are the one of him with the suspenders and cigarette and the publicity photo of him. I didn’t know there were so many others.

  3. looks like the tune of Stop Breaking Down which is in open A tuning 😀

  5. When Ken gets over Jazz and gets around to the Blues, I think we’ve found his editor…

  6. Great performer, but I dislike how this guy gets so much buzz when no one knows about Blind Willie Johnson, whom I prefer musically.

  7. Once you get an ear for the origional version after hearing it so electrified by other artists you realize how much nicer it is in it’s pure form

  8. I like this… it sounds great for as old as it is.

  9. It’s actually a painting heavily cropped from the larger one at 2.13.

  10. It sounds so simple at first listening..but it involves an extraordinary amount of overtones both in the playing and singing.I´m tryn to cover this song now… so help me Rob
