I believe the main riff in this song is played in Open E5 Tuning (EBEEBE), but I chose to do it in Open E Minor Tuning (EBEGBE) just so that I could play my way through the main riff, and still have the G-string for the end solo. You can search YouTube and youll see in one of their live performances where Joe Perry has a second guitar strapped-on to play the end solo – probably in standard tuning. Since I cant get away with that in a video, this is my attempt to do it all in Open E Minor tuning. A classic song and lots of fun to play either way.

  1. i see why u did this ,so u could play the solo but rhythmically ,it’s EBEBBE I believe the object is to have all those lush over tones from the open strings, very nice indeed..:)

  2. My original "The Paul" was a gift from my parents back in the mid-70’s. I sold it after high school and kicked myself ever since. I saw this one for sale and grabbed it right away. Time to have her re-fretted, but still great condition and a lot of fun to play. Thanks, and take care.

  3. I paid 400.00 in 1979 for a new "The Paul" I am 49 now and I just had her refretted. She still has the original pots and Grover tuners. I can’t believe anyone would change out the stock pickups. It came with Dirty Fingers humbuckers which are screaming hot pickups. I pity the fool who tries to separate me from my Paul!
Oh yeah…Like your guitar and nice job…Take It easy

  4. $350? Ahhh, the good ‘old days. Can’t find deals like that anymore. Take care and jam on!

  5. i play this song in e, mostly on the 2nd and 4th frets, it’s pretty dang close.

  6. Cool song-always loved this one. You do a really good job on covering it. You’re getting some nice sounds out of that axe. Do you like "the Paul" pretty well? I was looking at one of those series (the SG) in a vintage shop the other day. Wondering if it would be worth pursuing…take it easy!
