FULL COURSE, TAB, JAM TRACKS: truefire.at More Free Guitar Lessons: bit.ly On Twitter – www.twitter.com On Facebook – www.truefire.com Duane Allman is rightfully acknowledged as one of the greatest and most influential electric slide guitarists ever, and his incredible recording of this Blind Willie McTell classic, from The Allman Brothers band: Live at Fillmore East, is a must-learn for slide enthusiasts. Duane usually played slide in an open E tuning (low to high: EBEG# BE), using a glass Coricidin bottle on the ring finger of his fretting hand. "Statesboro" is played in the key of D so most of the soloing revolves around the 10th position, moving between 10th and eighth, as well as up to 13th position. Pay close attention to the pick-hand: I use my fingers to pick (like Duane) which helps one achieve more clarity in the notes as opposed to using a pick.

  1. Great work! a most Educational Video with critical background info on Duane. I don’t even play but was intrigued and learned a lot. I’m from that era and the medicine was pronounced core-a-SEE-dun here in Florida. Used to see these guys for free or minimal cover charge until the Fillmore Album came out. DIdn’t know what the hell we had or just how lucky we were to hear him. Big time road band all up and down east coast and pity the poor "headline" group that had to follow this talent.

  2. terrific background-explanations- ! great job! Thanks a lot from Germany!

  3. Nice job! Mindless critics should note that this is a free guitar lesson, enough for most fledgling guitar players to work on for a couple of years.

  4. Thanks for the clarification. My fault for not picking up that RI stood for re-issue. D’oh.
Actually I was kinda hoping you might have access to a time machine. There’s a little indiscretion in my past I’d like to rectify. Well, bury it in a location where it’s less likely to be discovered really. But that’s another story.
    😉

  5. How could any of what you say be true? Duane had a ’59 LP made especially for him – when he was only 13 years old, and before he became famous?
-He might have had a ’59 replica custom made for him at some later date.
-He might have had a ’59 Les Paul modified especially for him at some time in his career.
You can’t make a ’59 Les Paul in any year other than 1959 – not without a time machine anyway.
Maybe someone was telling you a fib to try to sell you a guitar, or jack up the price.

  6. …while some of this is true I believe the guitar he used for the Fillmore East shows was a ’59 RI that Gibson had made especially for Duane. Prior to the show the Gibson Rep brought two ’59’s. Duane kept and played one and the other was given to Reddog, his guitar roadie. The original 59′ Duane played was Cherry not Tobacco Sunburst….not to be a no-it-all but I had a chance to buy the Reddog 59′ a few years back and he told me the story..biggest mistake i ever made not gettin it

  7. Just an FYI to you tone-freaks: Duane played a gold-top in the Allman Brothers for like the first 2 albums til Sep 1970 when he traded with a local musician for a ’59 burst plain-top, but, part of the deal was that he could keep the pickups he had in his gold-top, so they swapped ’em from one guitar to the other. So whichever kind of PAF’s (alnico II or V) were in his gold-top are the same pickups you hear on the "Fillmore East" album (because Duane used the flat-top ’59 at the Fillmore shows).

  8. Freaking "Story Tellers" blah blah blah…jeez. Play something!

  9. great lesson man. I really like that you recognized trucks. all i needed was to hear the slide by itself. oh yeah and unlike the guitar lessons i took when i was a kid you are very easy to listen to. POST ONE ON BLUE SKY!!!

  10. Andy was one of my favorite Guitar World editors. If you freaks want to appreciate the value of this lesson, shut up and LISTEN. Freaking internet attention-challenged gen Y geeks…
