Duane usually played slide in an open E tuning (low to high: EBEG# BE), using a glass Coricidin bottle on the ring finger of his fretting hand. "Statesboro" is played in the key of D so most of the soloing revolves around the 10th position, moving between 10th and eighth, as well as up to 13th position. Pay close attention to the pick-hand: I use my fingers to pick (like Duane) which helps one achieve more clarity in the notes as opposed to using a pick.

  1. Not to be unduly critical, but in what sense has derek trucks advanced music? Does he not simply carry on the styles of Duane Allman and Elmore James? These two would almost make the list, except for the fact that they follow the slide guitar techniques of Robert Johnson (not as good, but they do use electric guitar, not original by the time they did it)

  2. nah mate its in the key of d guitar is tuned to open E

  3. I’m confused I have tuned my guitar to an open D and the licks you are playing are on the 10th to the 12th frets………where am I going wrong here?
