Im posting this for a friend as an example of playing slide in standard tuning. I am by no means good enough to give lessons. If you get something out of it then thats all I care about. Im playing in E but capoed up two frets. Im playing slide mostly on the B, G, and D strings and using the A chord shape up and down the neck. For the intro I am using the D chord shape of the E7. For the ending lick I am using a few notes from the E pentatonic scale. I play slide in standard tuning on the electric guitar a lot, I find its a real pain in the ass to constantly open tune.

  1. this is standard tuning but he’s using a capo on the 1st fret

  2. Is my guitar out of tune or was this a slide blues in F? I would have been impressed hearing it in E. I know you just move everything up a fret but in F you have no open strings to play with, really.

  3. Really really good playing. After 18 months of playing I’m only now going to try to learn a little slide. Can you tell me, is there a danger of damaging the neck if you don’t have high action? I generally like low action and I sold my cheapo guitars and only have a few good guitars that I don’t want to damage.

  4. absolutely amazing!!!! Straight from the delta!!!

  5. Well, actually, standard tuning is EADGbe…

  7. Man you really got that rock-punchy sound out of your guitar.

  8. excellent playing! thanks for sharing the video.

  9. buy a new one? they arent worth THAT much… I mean, if you pay 10 dlls a year, is that a problem?

  10. who told you not to play in standard tuning? I agree with not using a pick, everyone should learn fingerpicking at first, but I would think standard tuning is the best way to learn guitar…

  11. No musts accept for accept for playing what you feel

  12. You can play either way. The advantage of an open tuning (after you learn it) is that you can play chords with the slide. For instance, I have a guitar tuned to Open D Major. So, I can play Major triads up and down the neck just by putting the slide over the appropriate fret. Moreover, if I put a finger one fret behind (toward the nut) the slide on the 3rd string… magically, it’s a minor triad. Of course, you action has to be high for that to work.

  13. … or you can just get a piece of pipe, a lipstick tube, a neck off of a beer bottle etc… That’s what the original guys who invented this style of playing did.

  14. When anyone says standard they mean EADGBE, low to high
